This ceremonial chest of drawers is taken from a cabinetmaking work by Guillaume Benneman (1750-1811) and Joseph Stöckel (1743-1802).
This perfectly executed piece of furniture was originally an order from Marie-Antoinette to the two cabinetmakers.
This chest of drawers opens with two doors generously decorated with gilded bronzes decorated with foliage, friezes and acanthus leaves.
The central mask shows a scene by the sculptor Claude Michel known as Clodion (1738-1814) faithfully to the original.
These openings include an original offset lock accompanied by its key.
The interior offers four identical spaces.
The belt conceals three drawers decorated with interlacing highlighted with bronze baguettes.
The central drawer has a bronze lion’s mouth as an entrance.
The front and rear uprights, with projections, decorated with falling acanthus and asparagus leaves, end in spinning top feet, also decorated with collarettes and large palmette clogs.
The sides are worked in the same spirit with scene masks.
The whole is topped with thick Carrara marble following the lines of the furniture and bordered by a frieze of eggs.
The many hours of work necessary for this creation, both for the ornamental part and for the structure, reveal a breathtaking rendering where mastery and art have combined to give birth to this Marie-Antoinette chest of drawers.
