– Hand-carved sculpted cabriolet legs with scroll feet

Description: Block front shell carved case furniture reached the pinnacle of its development in Newport, Rhode Island during the 18th-century. This beautifully proportioned Townsend chest illustrates 18th-century aesthetic principles and decorative motifs in a distinctly American furniture form. Its bold design was inspired by classical architecture and required the use of large blocks of swirl-grained mahogany. Carved in alternating convex and concave blocks, the wood-rich front resembled piers, each topped with a handsome shell-carved cap. The chest is a reproduction of a cherished antique that resides in the masterworks gallery of Colonial Williamsburg’s DeWitt Wallace Museum. The antique is attributed to the cabinetmaking shop of John Townsend of Newport, RI, whose craftsmanship epitomized the block-front form among New England furniture-making shops.

Condition Report: Scuffs, scratches and wear as expected with usage. Overall a very nice piece.

A French Country style gentleman’s chest by White Furniture. Cherry wood with a slightly distressed finish, ogee edge to the top, brass hardware, decoratively carved frieze over doors that conceals a hidden drawer, raised door & drawer fronts, column-like front corners, and a solid base. Features a center two door cabinet revealing an interior of three removable cubbies over two drawers, top one having removable dividers. Above the center cabinet is a hidden drawer in the frieze, and below the center cabinet are two large drawers. All drawers are of dovetail construction. Made in Mebane, North Carolina, USA, in the late 20th Century.

Measures: 42.25w 20.5d 59.5h

Excellent condition with signs of light previous use. Doors and drawers function properly. Structurally sound and sturdy. Condition Rating: 9.0 / 10.0
